Cultural Capital...Made at the Airport
The film ´Cultural Capital....made at the Airport´ is a critical view to the origins and the contents of the idea ´Cultural Capital´: How was its process of development? And first of all: How was it born?
January 1985, Airport Athena, meeting by chance: Melina Mercouri, singer and greek minister of arts and culture and her french colleague Jack Lang are having a stop over.
They get to talk and that is how first ideas about a Cultural Capital in Europe come into being. Only 5 months later, Athena is the first city bearing the title.
Today it is not only a glory to be nominated for the Cultural Capital Europe, it also is highly conducive for the reputation of any city.
Where the Cultural Capital settles it comes to enthusiasm and financial and touristic wealth: It comes to CHANGES. But what follows? Does the Cultural Capital leave the City behind and rushes to its next aim? Does it lose its youthful appeal by rushing and leaving all these cities? How could the just mentioned CHANGE and this turning- away affect a city?
This film wants to show all these questions and the resulting problems and stimulate thinking about the topic.
