Fortifications
FORT MARIE LOUISE is the main fortification on the Muzil Peninsula. Constructed in 1823 and built during different historic periods, which resulted in a complex spatial assembly, the fort has served as a warehouse until 2007. The project “Heritage Marie Louise” seeks to preserve this exceptional building by revealing its military history to the public throughout the last 200 years. Therefore an additional architectural structure (viewing tower) will be placed near the main entrance of the historic site, providing information for visitors, tickets to the fort, catering, sanitary facilities and access to the plateau by connecting it to the ferry port and Maritime Museum at the bottom of the hill. On top of the new iconic structure visitors can enjoy the unique view over the fort that is being reconquered by nature.
FORT MUZIL is the best maintained typical circular fort in the city of Pula. In the context of military use from 1855 to 2007, exploitation in the past was huge: It was constructed between 1852 and 1855 and extended by the cannon battery in 1878. The polygonal coastal cannon batteries, added in 1883 and 1909, connected to the fort by an underground corridor are hidden and sheltered by a strong embankment toward the sea.
